Baha'i Administration / second International Baha'i Council / Guardian–President Joseph Pepe Remey / **Letters** # **Letter to Amy Krueger** #### **Joseph Pepe Remey** ##### April 22, 1989 [↓ PDF](https://leland-jensen-info.netlify.app/1989-04-22-jp-remey-to-krueger.pdf) *** *Frequently cited letter of Joseph Pepe Remey explaining his non-involvement as guardian and "the 'conflict'" surrounding the guardianship.* *** **Dear Amy Krueger:\[1]** Considering the present-day confused state of affairs concerning the Institution of Guardianship of the Baha'i Faith since the death of Mason Remey, and because of my unwillingness to assume the obligations and responsibilities required of the Guardian, my self-imposed "seclusion in silence" has served as a "spiritual sanctuary" protecting me from further unpleasant experiences inflicted upon me in the past as a result of my "active" participation in the "conflict." For these reasons, it is always painful for me to receive letters such as yours which must be left unanswered or, as in your case, answered "ambiguously." There exist to-day several groups — under the Banner of Baha'u'llah — claiming defense of the Institution of Guardianship; each in terms of its own. Under moral and spiritual obligation to Mason Remey's memory, my dedication to that (his) purpose prevents me from pledging allegiance to any one specific group, convinced that eventually a general reconciliation will come about. The spiritual joy you are experiencing as a newly indoctrinated Baha'i expressed so well in you letter reminded me of my own enthusiasm during my early contacts with Baha'u'llah's Teachings. Unfortunately, urgent family obligations require my being absent from Florence during the Summer months each year. Dr. Jensen's suggestion that you visit me as "guardian" surprises me as he surely knows I am living in Florence as a private citizen, totally independent, and locally known as "Professor Pepe." With sincerest best wishes, I am, \[signed] **"Pepe"** *** **Endnotes** **1.** \[Editor's note: A little over two years after this letter, in June 1991, Amy Krueger and fellow believer Sara Toole wrote and widely distributed a letter attacking the Second International Baha'i Council and Dr. Leland Jensen. In response, the Second International Baha'i Council issued an open letter to them dated August 15, 1991, addressing their arguments. Amy Krueger later became a follower of a group that espoused the continuation of the guardianship through Charles Mason Remey, but under a false claimant — Donald Harvey — who emerged from the French National Spiritual Assembly's crisis surrounding their acceptance of Remey's Proclamation as Guardian in 1960. Donald Harvey met only one of the two criteria necessary for a valid appointment to the guardianship: he was appointed — as a part of the continued test for the believers — but he was not a son, as required by the *Will and Testament of 'Abdu'l-Baha*. Donald Harvey passed away in 1991 and was followed by his appointee Jacques Soghomonian, another previous member of the French National Spiritual Assembly. Membership in the Harvey group saw an increase as a result of prompting by Joseph Pepe Remey, who sought to take the pressure off himself to fulfill the duties of a guardian. >Even you did not accept yourself or your role as the guardian. You directed the believers to turn to Donald Harvey. > >(Dr. Leland Jensen, *First Epistle to Joseph Pepe Remey*, June 8, 1989, 7–8.) Not surprisingly Amy Krueger persists to this day in her attacks on Dr. Leland Jensen and the Second International Baha'i Council.] *** **Document Details** - **Type:** Letter - **Date:** April 22, 1989 - **Author:** Joseph Pepe Remey - **Length:** 1 page, typed (original pagination) - **Editorial Note:** Reproduced as written. **Archivist Notes:** - Since the passing of Charles Mason Remey (February 4, 1974), there had been an ongoing exchange of letters between Dr. Opal Jensen and Dr. Leland Jensen with Joseph Pepe Remey, many prompting him to assume his role as guardian and to come to Missoula to study the faith. - Dr. Jensen encouraged believers to write Joseph Pepe Remey. - Letters to and from Joseph Pepe Remey were widely distributed among believers at this time. - With the ongoing failure of Joseph Pepe Remey to assume the guardianship, Dr. Leland Jensen wrote a series of seven epistles to him between June 1989 and May 1991. After these, six additional letters followed, the last of which went unread, as Joseph Pepe Remey passed away before it reached him. This letter may have been part of the impetus to begin writing those epistles. **Archivist Classification** - **Collection**: Baha'i Administration → Second International Baha'i Council → Joseph Pepe Remey - **Period:** 1989, a year and eight months prior to the formation of the Second International Baha'i Council **Source Provenance** - **Source:** Photocopied and shared by Amy Krueger. **Related Documents** - ***Visiting Charles Mason Remey,*** Donald Havey and Jacques Soghomonian, September 5, 1972 — Future false claimants to the guardianship meet with Charles Mason Remey no knowing he had already made his appointment of Joseph Pepe Remey. - ***First Epistle to Joseph Pepe Remey***, Dr. Leland Jensen, June 8, 1989 — Joseph Pepe Remey's letter to Amy Krueger is mentioned on pages 2–3. - ***SIBC Response to Amy Krueger and Sara Toole***, Second International Baha'i Council, August 15, 1991 **Reference Information** - **Permanent Link:** https://leland-jensen.info/joseph-pepe-remey/letters/1989-04-22-amy-krueger/ - **Download PDF:** [1989-04-22-jp-remey-to-krueger.pdf](https://leland-jensen-info.netlify.app/1989-04-22-jp-remey-to-krueger.pdf) - **Citation (Chicago Style):** Remey, Joseph Pepe, to Amy Krueger.
